Congratulations to the 2023-24 Associated Press Sports Editors Diversity Fellows.

The 12th class will be Lauren Campbell, James Jackson, Wilton Jackson, Lauren Jennings, Callie Lawson-Freeman and Mallory Merda.

·      A trending sports editor for MassLive.com, Campbell has also been a reporter, podcast host and producer for Boston’s pro sports teams.

·      James Jackson is an NBA editor for The Athletic. He has worked at the NBA and for Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and gained video experience with ESPN.

·      A reporter at Sports Illustrated since 2020, Wilton Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree at LSU and a master’s in sport science from Jackson State.

·      Jennings is the West sports content coach for Gannett’s new Center for Community Journalism, managing people and content from five states.

·      Lawson-Freeman is a breaking and trending news writer at Yahoo! Sports. A member of the Sports Journalism Institute’s 30th class, she received a master’s degree from San Francisco State University.

·      A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Merda has been a member of the USA Today Network’s digital sports team.

The Fellows will take part in a weekend of training and enrichment hosted by past APSE president Michael Anastasi on Jan. 12-14 in Nashville, Tenn. Other program activities include being paired with mentors; participating in on-site APSE contest judging Feb. 25-29 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.; helping judge the student contest; and attending their respective APSE region meetings (in person or by Zoom) before graduating on June 22 at the APSE summer conference in Charlotte, N.C.

  1. I’ve been a fan of Wilton’s for a while. He’s as equally adept at his articles as he is his video segments, which is rare. He’s also an educator at Jackson State, and a huge supporter of NABJ. I’m glad to see him being recognized by APSE!
